Cluster Flies (Pollenia spp.)


1. There are six species of cluster flies in the US, three of which are known to invade buildings.



2. Cluster flies are not typically a health hazard, however, they can cause a low health threat in sensitive areas.


3. Cluster flies enter houses in the fall to hibernate. They often aggregate in secluded inaccessible places such as wall voids, attics, and drop ceilings.


4. In spring (or warm winter days) they become active and while attempting to leave their hibernation site, they end up inside of structures.


5. They normally live outdoors where they are attracted to flowers and ripe fruit.


6. Larvae of cluster flies are parasitic in earthworms.
